Guam in the south and the remaining islands, i.e. the Northern Mariana Isalnds, are part of the Mariana Islands; together they belong to the USA. The most important of the 17 islands are Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Pagan. They are of volcanic origin and many volcanoes are active and some are submerged. The islands have a tropical rainforest climate and are occasionally subject to hurricanes. Bird life is very different from Guam and there are eleven endemic bird species, four of which are believed to have become extinct in the last 50 years. Tourism is currently on the decline.
The Mariana Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Mariana Islands belong to USA. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
