Madeira is located about 730 km west of the Moroccan coast. It is well developed touristicly and offers excellent hiking possibilities. A large part of Madeira is overgrown with laurel forest. Since the laurel forest has disappeared on mainland Europe during the Ice Age, the remains on the islands are protected. Due to the isolated location, some endemic bird species have developed here and on the neighboring islands, so BirdLife International has declared these islands - including Madeira - a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P). To the south-east of Madeira are the Ilhas Desertas, which BirdLife International has recognized as an IBA (Important Bird Area) because of the significant occurrence of sea birds.
Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally Madeira belongs to Portugal. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
