New Guinea is the World's second largest island. It lies in the southwestern Pacific Ocean south of the equator and is assigned to Melansesia. The highest point on the island, Puncak Jaya, reaches an altitude of 4,884 m above sea level. Apart from the high altitudes, most of New Guinea's landscapes have a warm and humid climate throughout the year. The island's biodiversity is breathtaking and much is still unexplored. BirdLife International has recognized the exceptionally high number of nine EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas) for a single island, but the number of registered IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) is zero, for both the Indonesian and Papuan halves of the island. In fact there should be hundreds. New Guinea remains an exciting adventure.
