Birds of the Society Islands

The Society Islands consist of 14 islands including Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Huahine and Bora Bora; they form the most important of the 5 archipelagos of French Polynesia. Rainforests have predominantly developed in the warm tropical climate. The islands are of volcanic origin; the highest point is Mont Orohena in Tahiti at 2241 m above sea level. The archipelago is home to a considerable number of different animal and plant species, including several endemic bird species, some of which are already extinct. There is an international airport on Tahiti, but the other islands also each have a small airport.

The Society Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Society Islands belong to France. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
