The Marquesas Archipelago is formed by the peaks of a submarine mountain range of volcanic origin. The landscape is very rugged; the highest point is Mont Oave at 1232 m above sea level. The windward side of the mountains is covered by tropical rainforest, while the leeward side is dry and occasionally semi-desert in character. Numerous endemic bird species and subspecies have evolved in the Marquesas.
The Marquesas Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Marquesas Islands belong to France. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
