The Crozet Islands archipelago is located in the southern Indian Ocean; it consists of five islands and some rocks. A sub-Antarctic research station (Base Alfred-Faure) that is inhabited all year round has been set up on the second largest island (Île de la Possession). The islands are of volcanic origin and reach an altitude of 1050 m above sea level. The climate is subpolar and high oceanic, and only allows treeless vegetation. The archipelago is located in the westerly wind zone between the 40° and 50° southern latitude, the Roaring Forties, so winds of force 10 and more blow here on around 100 days. The birdlife is dominated by penguins and birds from the order of tubenoses.
The Crozet Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Crozet Islands belong to France.
