Tokelau consists of the three tropical coral atolls Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo, which lie close to the date line in the Pacific Ocean and rise only a few meters above the water level. The distance to the nearest island group (Samoa) is about 480 km. Most of the rain falls between November and March. The birdlife is naturally strongly pelagic and there are significant tern colonies on all three atolls. The lack of a seaport and an airport as well as the problematic state of the environment are severely hampering the economic development of the area.
Tokelau is located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally Tokelau belongs to New Zealand.
