Vögel auf Spitzbergen und Jan Mayen

While Svalbard and Jan Mayen are more than 1100km apart, they are sometimes grouped together (country code SJ) for convenience, given that both are north of the Arctic Circle and part of Norway. While the Svalbard archipelago consists of several hundred islands and skerries, Jan Mayen is a single island of volcanic origin. There is a lot of overlap when it comes to birdlife, so BirdLife International is treating them together; it shows 16 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) for Svalbard and another IBA for Jan Mayen. Tourists traveling to Svalbard can often visit Jan Mayen as well. Large colonies of seabirds can be observed, such as Fulmars, Little Auks, Thick-billed Murres and Common Murres, as well as Atlantic Puffins and Black Guillemots.

The Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean. Legally the Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands belong to Norway.
