The Bonin Islands, Japanese: Ogasawara-guntō, are located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Of the more than 30 volcanic islands, only two are permanently inhabited. The climate is tropical and subtropical. The isolated location has led to the development of many endemic plant and animal species, earning the Bonin Islands World Heritage designation and the nickname "Galapagos of the Orient". Most of the few endemic bird species are now extinct. The Bonin Islands have no airport and can only be reached by helicopter in emergencies.
The Ogasawara Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Ogasawara Islands belong to Japan. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
