Vögel auf den Heard und McDonald-Inseln

€ 1.49 *

The subantarctic islands Heard and McDonald are of volcanic origin and lie 43km apart in the southern Indian Ocean. The highest point is Mawson Peak on Heard at 2745 m above sea level. The climate is cool temperate, strong westerly winds prevail and snowfall can occur all year round. About 70% of the area is covered by ice. The islands are one of the few places on earth where no alien species occur, which is why UNESCO has designated the islands as World Heritage Site. The islands are currently uninhabited, although a limited number of visitors are permitted to enter. The bird life consists of seabirds. The breeding population of Macaroni Penguins is estimated at one million.

The Heard and McDonald Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Heard and McDonald Islands belong to Australia.
