Mayotte belongs to the Comoros archipelago, but did not join the independent Union of the Comoros, but chose to remain with France in a referendum. The island has a volcanic origin, its highest point is at 660 m above sea level on Mont Benara on the main island. The climate is tropical with a slightly warmer rainy season from November to March than the dry season. The original tropical rainforest has largely retreated to higher altitudes. Nevertheless, rare - even endemic - bird species have survived.
Mayotte is located in the Indian Ocean. Legally Mayotte belongs to France.
