Vögel auf St. Helena

€ 2.49 *

The island of St. Helena is the tip of an extinct volcano in the southern Atlantic Ocean, reaching 818 m asl at Diana's Peak. The coasts are mostly cliffs. The island is more than 2000 km away from the nearest mainland. Due to this extreme isolation, many endemic creatures have evolved, including a plover (the "wirebird"), which has become the national symbol of St. Helena. The island has been modified over the centuries by many introduced animals and plants. Today much of the surface is deforested. Nevertheless, the first national park could be set up at Diana's Peak. UNESCO lists St. Helena as a candidate for World Heritage status.

St. Helena is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally St. Helena belongs to United Kingdom. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Secondary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-S).
