The volcanic island of Ascension lies isolated in the middle of the tropical Atlantic, but is inhabited. It reaches a height of 859m above sea level on Green Mountain (The Peak). The climate is hot and desert-like. For various reasons, more than 200 animal species have been introduced over time, which have caused the extinction of most native plant species and have also prevented native bird species from breeding. In 2005, Green Mountain National Park was opened on reforested land. A year later, Ascension was declared free of feral cats, and since then many seabirds have been breeding on the island again. The Ascension Frigatebird even breeds world-wide exclusively on Ascension and its offshore islets.
Ascension Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally Ascension Island belongs to United Kingdom.
