The Europa Island is part of the Îles Éparses, which in turn belong to the Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, and lies in the Mozambique Channel between Africa and Madagascar. The highest point of the atoll reaches only 7m above sea level. The climate is semi-arid and tropical hot with distinct dry and rainy seasons. The island has significant breeding colonies of several species of seabirds, particularly frigatebirds and terns. In addition, endemic subspecies of the White-tailed Tropicbird and the Madagascar White-eye have established themselves there. There is a small garrison and an airstrip on Europa, but no civilian population.
Europa Island is located in the Indian Ocean. Legally Europa Island belongs to France.
