The volcanic islands of Madeira and the Canary Islands belong to different countries, but are biologically connected to each other through the common occurrence of laurel forest and some endemic bird species and subspecies. The highest elevation is the Pico del Teide on Tenerife at 3715 m above sea level. The islands are popular tourist destinations and offer very good hiking opportunities.
The Madeira and the Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally the Madeira and the Canary Islands belong to Portugal and Spain. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
