The Bissagos Archipelago, also known as Bijagós Archipelago, consists of 88 islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Guinea-Bissau. 20 of them are permanently inhabited. The islands were formed from a delta of two rivers. These have formed an astonishing variety of landscape types, ranging from arid to mangrove to aquatic. Accordingly, you can also find a rich birdlife here, in particular the islands are an important wintering area for northern waders. Tourism development is currently beginning in the Bissagos archipelago.
